08/30/2012:
Today I finished my first day of school since May of 1984.
When did I get so
old?
However the classes were very interesting and I think the program will be a blast. Today I had Principals of Sustainability and Farm Ecocolgy for classes. Classes went from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm straight.
08/31/2012:
Today classes started at 9:00 and I got home at 8:30 pm with a 1/2 hr lunch and supper break.
The classes were forage and crop systems, and Farm skills. got to drive a tractor, use the loader and also how to change the oil and hydraulic fluid. For the crop and forage class we went to Bluebird Farms which is a 1800+ member CSA Farm. They have awesome operation and we will be spending a lot of time here as Mark, the owner, is one of our class instructors. A side benefit to this classroom is we came home with a load of fresh corn and melons (a little help for the starving college student). All this fresh air has me tuckered out so I have to go to bed so I can do it again tomorrow.
09/01/20012:
Today we were at Paradox Farms and they have hair sheep, milking and meat goats as well as a couple of dairy cows and sometimes pigs. They also do some custom grazing when they need additional animal impact as they are working on restoring the farms depleted soils. Every thing is grass and other forage based. The goats are also working on removing prickly ash and some other brush to re-establish oak savanna.
